What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a form of alternative medicine originated from Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) in which thin needles are inserted into the body.  Acupuncture is used for pain relief as well as other conditions.

Why did the Clinician order this exam/study?

Your clinician might have ordered this exam given symptoms such as low back pain, shoulder pain, headaches or migraines.

How do I prepare for this exam/study?

There is no preparation for this exam.

Who will be administering the exam/study?

Dr. Dave Hogarty will administer this exam.

What will I experience during the exam/study?

You will lie face up or face down on the padded exam table.  Approximately five to twenty needles are inserted into the skin.  Needles may be manipulated in various ways, including spinning, flicking, or moving up and down relative to the skin.  The needles are left in place 15-20 minutes. After that time, you will turn to the opposite side and repeat the process.  This is a non-invasive therapy treatment.

What should I do after the exam/study?

You may resume regular daily activities.  Make sure to drink plenty of fluids up to 48 hours after the exam.
